WEEKLY ESSAY & PERSPECTIVE

The Quiet Geometry of an October Fence Line
There is a brief stretch of morning before the valley wind takes hold when the world sounds remarkably like paper being turned over. From where I sit on the eastern side of the porch, the frost on the pasture posts catches the first clean angle of mountain light. It is easy to mistake this stillness for emptiness, but anyone who has spent more than two seasons here knows better: fall in Big Sky country is when our communities do their quietest, most deliberate work.
Between the hay baling and the winter snowpack forecasts, we tend to measure time by who stopped at the gate to talk about irrigation rights or high school football rosters. In an era where commentary moves at the speed of an angry refresh button, taking twenty minutes to watch coffee steam rise against the Bridgers is not nostalgia. It is an act of civic sanity.
